The following lightly edited piece written by yours truly was first published on December 16, 2022. It debunks an entrenched belief among indigenous leaders, activists, and others, namely that the treaties that were signed with many (but not all) aboriginal bands, tribes, and chiefdoms either created or enshrined the continuity of sovereign “First Nations.” It needs to be read in combination with several earlier pieces in this newsletter, including this one:
What accurate and truthful historical accounts prove is that whatever informal and shifting “sovereignty” local groups possessed was extinguished long before the first treaty was signed.
The overall theme of the piece below is that there is only one sovereign First Nation in Canada: the constitutional monarchy called Canada. All contrary assertions are rubbish even if some misguided woke jurists have ignored the law and claimed or acted otherwise.
