This beautifully crafted essay by Brian Giesbrecht, a retired Manitoba provincial court judge, a Senior Fellow with the Frontier Center for Public Policy, and a freelance writer contributing to various newspapers and other publications, deals with yet another specious “land back” claim by an indigenous group, this time the Saugeen Ojibway Nation in Ontario which asked for control over the entire Bruce Peninsula, plus all the water surrounding it.
First published on July 13, 2019, the case was settled largely in favour of the government of Canada in 2021. Still, there are many other land claims, many of them just as spurious as the one below, that will take decades and billions of dollars to settle with guilt obsessed “woke” judges interpreting treaties in ways neither their crafters nor signatories ever intended or could ever imagine in their wildest dreams.
To understand the basis for these wild claims, just read Giesbrecht’s thoughtful analysis.
