The following brilliantly conceived and beautifully composed essay was written by Peter Best, a retired lawyer, prominent editorial writer, and author of There is No Difference: An Argument for the Abolition of the Indian Reserve System and Special Race-based Laws and Entitlements for Canada’s Indians. The issues addresed are critically important both to truth and reconcilation but are almost never addressed by any media or outside Canada’s courtrooms, namely the contest between the rule of law and emotion-based morality when it comes to indigenous grievances. Readers willing to go beneath simplistic mainstream media accounts of how these grievances have been dealt with by both the federal government and the judiciary will be more than abundantly rewarded for their efforts.
